Hello,
I have a 2001 26 Sport. The fuel guage does not work correctly. The guage does not register correctly. One time while working on it int he yard here it showed correctly but that was the only time. Usually after about 10 or 15 gallong have been burned it shows low fuel warning. It needs to be calibrated but the way I have read  to do it, is to drain the tanks, fill it to 25% and calibrate, then fill to 50% calibrate and so on. Trouble is I do not have any where to store the fuel and do not want to burn off 170 gallons of fuel to do this. It is full right now. I was wondering if there is a way to pull the sending unit out of the tank and calibrate it that way? Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Daren Brantley

Darren,
Do you have Smartcraft gauges?

Per veradoownersclub (yes, I know you don't have Vrods, but this pertains to Smartcraft gauges)...
Quote
set the tank capacity and choose the default method of tank calibration...does not require you to fill it...find out from boat mfr what tank supplies what engine and set that tach for that tank.

If you have conventoinal guage you can check with a new sending unit, dont even remove old one yet.
just connect it to the  tank end of sensing wires and run it through its range.
if it reads correctly through its sweep, your old one is innacurate or connection is coroded .
It is basically  an ohm meter with a defined range(guage) and a variable resistor
(sender unit)  if float arm is at bottom of tank when empty and top or its range when full ant at top it is ok.
any electrical connection issue will make reading unreliable at guage or sending unit.

231, this is not a sender issue.  It is about calibrating Smartcraft gauges using the "default" method...

Got it Bob, I  didn't know for sure it was smartcraft although calibration mention hinted at it.  Sorry for  sidebar thread filler.
I am a big advocate of flowscan and similar FFM /totalizers
when applicable as a supplement to Fuel gauge data.
similar questions pop up on marine sites frequently as you know.
I often "pre answer question" conditionally without all the info as you've seen on your  new T.P.G. site as I'm never sure when poster will be back with more info or when I will see it. I will leave known smartcraft threads to you or refer to THT or TPG. Banging Head
