got a whole bunch of fishing line in my prop today.  it didnt stall the motor and i cut all most all of it off before making the run home.  pulled the prop and there was just a little line left.  it wasnt wrapped around the shaft but just stuck in there.  how do i check if my seals are still good.  no leg oil is leaking and will drain to see if there is water in the oil tomorrow.  or is it better just to change the seal.  just wondering how much the seals cost and how hard of a fix is it.  if the seals are reasonable and its a easy swap then it may be better to just change the seals.  any opinions and ideas are greatly appreciated.  thanks in advance, kor

oh i have a honda 225

SORRY ALL CAPS.

SMALL AMOUNT OF AIR PRESSURE  & VACCUUM CAN BE USED TO TEST SEAL BUT THAT MAY NOT BE REQUIRED, IF LINE DINT MAKE IT PAST THE LIPS OR IF IT DID AND YOU GOT IT OUT WITHOUT DAMAGINE THE SEAL YOU COULD BE OK.
SEAL REPLACEMENT IS NORMALLY NOT TOO BAD, DONT KNOW YOUR MOTOR BUT-- MOST= DRAIN  THE DRIVE,  REMOVE THE PROP AND THE ENDPLATE REPLACE PROPSHAFT SEAL AND O-RING OR GASKET ON ENDPLATE AND RE INSTALL,REFILL. SHOULDNT BE THAT EXPENSIVE AT DEALER.
BUT YOU MAY BE OK,
TEST IF NO PRES ,VAC PUMP TOOL AVAIL.
DROP/TILT DOWN,LOOSEN UPPER VENT PLUG AS IF YOU WERE DRAINING,MAKE SURE LUBE FULL, WITH 5GAL BUCKET OVER PROP, FULL OF WATER, TAKE A TURKEY BASTER OR SIMILAR  ITEMAND APPLY GENTLE  PERSISTENT AIR PRESSURE TO GEARCASE AND WATCH FOR BUBBLES. IF NONE, REVERSE TO VACCUUM, IS IT HOLDING?  IF YOUR CONFIDENCE IS NOW BETTER, REPLACE PLUG, GO FISHING , KEEP EYE ON LUBE FOR A FEW TRIPS, IF NO WATER OR LEAKS YOUR GOOD TO GO.
BUT IF REALLY UNSURE . REPLACE SEAL.  REST EASY.

heres some pics of the leg oil.  its ams oil and its not milky or didnt see water rising to top after draining.  we had about a 30 min run to the harbor so pretty confident my seals are okay.  will try the pressure/vac test.  also is a pic of the line that was left when i pulled my prop and some pics of the seal (hard to see).  what do you guys think.  thanks again, kor

You may have gotten lucky, Thumbs Up  but keep an eye on that seal for a season, also put some heavy spline grease on that propshaft , but do pressure vac checks anyway.
