2008 23' Sports-----Should my hatch that opens to access the battery compartment have a rubber seal around it to prevent water from entering the bilge?

I can tell you on the 1991 260 Walk's they don't have rubber gaskets around the battery compartment.  Someone mentioned flipping the hatch so the hinges are on top.  I did that on Saturday before washing it down and have to say it worked like a champ.  The only thing I will be doing now is to add a thin gasket to keep the errant/transom wash out of the battery compartment (I have the cutout transom and the boat is wet slipped).
