Hi, I have a 1999 Proline 2950 with original Evinrude 225 Ficht engines. They are hitting the age (over 1,000 hours) where they are getting even more unreliable. I was down for 9 weeks last summer waiting for a new computer for one of them.

I am considering a re-power for them and trying to make the 2 stroke vs. 4 stroke decision as well as what HP to go with (225 again or up to 250 which would be the max hp the boat is rated for).

I'm worried about weight, speed (hole shot etc.) and how complicated it will be to re-plumb all the controls ;-)

Anyone have experience with this boat and some of the newer engines?

Thanks,

dave

You will be ok with most repowers on that boat.
Maybe you can part out or sell the FIchts to other people who need parts?
not a lot of diff between 225 and 250 and 2 or 4stroke except a bit of weight.
that debate is for another site. a lot of money but it will be like a new boat if fuel tanks are clean.

Hi Dave -- I hadn't responded to your post, because my 2950 has twin I/O diesels.  I have no opinions / expertise on outboards, although I favor the 4 cycles, but just a comment about the weight factor:  That boat is big enough that you don't need to worry about weight -- The difference between 2 cycles and 4 cycles might be 150 lbs. or so, which is the same as having one person standing at the rear of the cockpit.  It would be a significant factor on a much smaller boat.  (My diesels weigh 1165 pounds each)...  Good luck on the re-power!   Thumbs Up Thumbs Up
